Thomas Jefferson’s Farm

Thomas Jefferson’s Farm is an enjoyable and engaging book for children that explores school garden contests, history, botany and seasonal weather themes. This can be used in any elementary school classroom to promote learning about both history and gardening.

In 1789, Jefferson revolutionized farming practices at Monticello by creating his own system of seven-year crop rotations for food and rest. To rejuvinate the land, he advocated using cover crops, crop rotation, contour plowing, and grazing sheep to keep soil alive and healthy.

He also turned away from growing tobacco, which depleted the soil and required child labor. Instead, he preferred wheat which didn’t require such young workers.

Smoking tobacco was not only expensive to grow, but it drained the soil of essential nutrients. Furthermore, it required large amounts of fuel for extraction to extract tar from its leaves.

At Monticello, Jefferson sought to modernize slavery and diversify the plantation’s workforce. To do this, he established cottage industries such as a nail factory, textile mill, tinsmithing operation, and water-powered mills.

James Hubbard was a slave at Monticello Plantation during the late 18th century. He was an exemplary slave, constantly striving for personal improvement.

He worked at Jefferson’s nailery and helped with other tasks such as hauling freight and tending a charcoal-burning kiln. Additionally, his earnings enabled him to purchase some items.
