The Pirates of the Caribbean

From its humble beginnings as a ride in Disneyland Park, The Pirates of the Caribbean quickly evolved into an international blockbuster film series that has grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide – making it the 14th highest-grosing franchise all time!

“Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” follows blacksmith Will Turner and eccentric pirate “Captain” Jack Sparrow as they embark on an epic quest to rescue Elizabeth Swann, kidnapped by Captain Barbossa. Soon enough, these daring adventurers find themselves engaged in an epic battle against an army of evil pirates under a terrible curse!

Parents should be aware that this ‘pirate movie’ contains several adult themes, though they are presented logically. These include references to rape (though not graphically), hanging, prostitution and the idea that winning requires lying, stealing and cheating instead of being honorable and good.

The story also contains some’scary’ scenes which may scare younger children. These include:

Skeletons appear throughout the film, especially during the attack on Port Royal where the crew transform into skeletal pirates. When they reach Isla de Muerta, a man is seen being dunked into a well and another drinking wine from his ribcage.

In addition, the undead pirate crew are seen as skeletal figures in the moonlight. This may cause some children distress if they have never before encountered such an effect. Nonetheless, these occurrences should not be as frightening as they seem at first glance and most kids will quickly get used to it.
