What is a good chapter book for a 5 years old?
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L.. Raggedy Ann stories by Johnny Gruelle. I read this charming Swedish import to my two children a few months ago.
Detective Gordon, the local crime stopper, has a greater fondness for tea and cake than police work, and don’t even think of asking him to use the gun. He gets a small but enthusiastic assistant when he meets a young mouse who, in a case he has to solve, he mistakenly thinks is the criminal.. Together, they develop a plan to discover the real thief who stole all of Squirrel’s nuts. The beautiful, colorful illustrations are a wonderful accompaniment.
I went to our public library this morning to watch The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.. All they had were customized versions. They said they were glad I pointed out they don’t have the original and they’ll order it. Your blog post has now made this book available to many more kids 🙂 Thank you for taking the time to create this wonderful website.
I was looking for the perfect chapter book for my 5-year-old. I picked up a copy of My Father’s Dragon and my son loved it. Chapter by chapter, he wanted more and more. He laughed a lot and asked me to read his favorite parts again..

Freddy could just be the boy version of Junie B. In this hilarious chapter book series, perfect for kindergarten, he always gets into difficult situations. I enjoy reading chapter books to my two boys.. Even though my six-year-old is getting to the point where he can read alone, I still love cuddling up with a good book with my boys on either side of me..

I also liked The Bobbsey Twins when I was able to find this series, ReplyCancel One of the best read books I read aloud to my kids was The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick — my kids could barely bear to read the next chapter.. We would study the drawings to really capture the events in the story..
Years later, the movie came out and we all enjoyed watching our favorite book adapted to this medium. ReplyCancel The Magic series by Edward Eager was my FAVORITE when I was a child.. I’m also happy to see so many Roald Dahl on this list 🙂 ReplyCancel One that is often missed but shouldn’t be is The Last of the Really Great Wangdoodles by Julie Andrews Edwards. It’s a wonderful lecture with colorful pictures and great characters, ReplyCancel A lot of wonderful books have been mentioned. These aren’t for really young kids, but I also loved reading Maniac Magee, Savvy, Remarkable, and The Giver to my kids.

love A Wrinkle in Time too but I’m not sure if my kids were ready for it. ReplyCancel Gone Away Lake and Return to Gone Away by Elizabeth Enright are also excellent reads. The main characters are a boy and a girl (cousins). They find a ghost town and basically make it their go-to. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it yourself? Anyway, keep it up, it’s rare to see a great blog like this these days. There is no gold star for reading chapter books instead of picture books. So if your child is struggling to listen to a chapter book, keep going with the picture books — you want reading to be fun and not something they’re afraid of. Help your child get their STEM off the ground with these informative chapter books about a group of friends going on science-related escapades. It’s a good idea to keep picture books in the mix, even as your child’s reading skills grow, as they give kids a wider range of reading options and have a strong visual appeal.
It’s a great opportunity to meet with your kids about a good book and then discuss it.. My son really lived the Digby O’Day series — like Mercy Watson, they are a big bridge between picture books and books with longer chapters.. One of the best ways to get a video game-obsessed child to read more is to give them books about video games. Thank you so much for this book list. I’m constantly looking for interesting chapter books that I can read to my 5-year-old.
